Ava's Story

We went some months not knowing if we could even have kids. It took my mom 12 years to get pregnant with my brother. So I just thought maybe that would be a problem I would face too. Although when I thought of 12 years I didn't think I could stand that so I guess you could say my faith diminished. I was coming to terms that we might not have children.
When we least expected it I got a positive test. We were SO excited.

I had a good pregnancy and it was getting close to the 20 week mark. We found out it was a girl on October 31st 2008. I love Halloween so I was excited to have the appointment on that day. During the appointment we found out it was a girl. We were so excited. At that appointment they said something about the Kidneys being large but we really didn't think nothing of it. They said it would correct itself probably. Then on January 2, 2009 we had our 4-D ultrasound. We were in there a while and I wasn't aware of a problem. After we left the ultrasound room they directed me and Adam to a separate room to wait on the doctor. I knew then something wasn't right. I got very nervous. The doctor came in the room in what was a whirlwind to me. She said the baby's kidneys were showing large and we needed to go to Birmingham. That is about all we understood. In what should have been such an exciting day I left there with a heavy load. Of course I didn't want everyone knowing because we didn't even know what we were dealing with. I didn't even know how to explain it to people. At church one Sunday night Adam had a feeling to ask prayer for her. Of course I break down and start squalling. That was the first time I let myself cry over it. Our church prayed for us and her and the elders anointed me. It seemed after that everyone else was just so positive. I couldn't' get a grip on that optimism. I guess the mom in me started preparing for the worse. I started doing research and finding out exactly what we were dealing with in the months ahead. Your thought process goes through so much. I overanalyzed everything. We went to the appointment at UAB on January 7, 2009 and they did some extensive tests. She did have enlarged Kidneys. They explained it all very well and we left knowing alot more. Basically she had urine backing up in the kidney and not flowing out correctly. Plus she had an extra ureter tube coming from her Kidney to the bladder. At this point they talked about surgery. I was disappointed and angry all at once because everyone thought she was fine and I guess I thought when we got there they wouldn't see anything wrong. Well the Lord knows better!! We went to UAB for another appointment on February, 5, 2009. This time the doctors were more hopeful and the talk of surgery went away. They thought it would be something to treat with antibiotics and close monitoring. So my hopes were higher that day. Of course the fear never left. I went into labor March 13, 2009 at 10:57 pm (why that time sticks with me I don't know). I labored for 32 hours before my epidural. Then after about 10 more hours of labor Ava was born on March 16, 2009 at 5:30pm. She weighed 7lbs 2 oz and was 20 inches long. She was perfect in every way!!!! The hospital did an ultrasound and they showed her kidneys were ok. The pediatrician came and told us the good news the next day. When she left the room I broke down and cried. Everyone that knows me knows when I cry my face turns red and blotchy so it was hard to cover up. When the nurses came in they immediantly looked in horror at me. I am sure they were thinking ok, this mom might not be emotionally stable to care for her child. I made sure to tell them they were tears of joy!!!!

We followed up with an appointment to UAB. The doctors did a few tests and confirmed her kidneys were working properly. God is good and knows what he is doing!!!!! I am ashamed to say that many times I questioned his ways. I guess thats just the human in me. He proved to me that even when my faith is low and heart is heavy He is in control.
